“Under Jason's Byrne's astonishing direction, this achieves a kind of poetry… Byrne's compositionally beautiful framing echoed in Cordelia Chisholm's claustrophobic set. A piece of inspired brilliance, Chisholm's naked house is less a space so much as a metaphor. Sheared of its wall, exposing its hollowed cavities, its tumbledown frailty, its last gasp wallpaper, a faded grandeur lies steeped in squalor. Evoking a post war Coventry, a bombed out building site, a blasted masculinity, or a hollowed out soul detonated from the inside… All cohering into a hopeless space for new beginnings tethered to a dark past.
A Whistle in the Dark delivers a knockout punch to send you reeling.”

“This is a fantastic revival of Tom Murphy’s great play from 1961. Putting this huge, macho fist-fest into the small Peacock space, further constricted by Cordelia Chisholm’s tight boxed-in set, serves to compress the power here into a dramatic explosion that sets your hair on end… Jason Byrne’s direction skillfully stuffs the action into this suffocating little room. The hallway and door to the rear are beautifully used.
This is a meaty three-act play, with a running time of two hours and 45 minutes. Not a line could be cut; every word is either a knife or a jewel. It’s a play by a writer confident that the theatre has the capacity to explain everything. A brilliant company of actors, complete with inspired directing and design team, deliver a knockout of a show.”

“The most impressive work in this year’s Dublin Theatre Festival is also its most formally traditional.
This Whistle brims with a visceral sense of claustrophobia that is complemented by the cramped squalor of Cordelia Chisholm’s design.”
